‘What matters to you?’ day 2024

6th June 2024

“What matters to you?” day is an annual celebration of putting people at the heart of their care or support. Look out for our Podcast with Tommy Whitelaw where we will hear more about why it is important and where the idea came from but in the meantime, have a think about what matters to you!

Health and care teams across the world have come up with innovative ways to have “What matters to you?” conversations, including using inspiring artwork, videos and poetry like these examples from Scotland. The conversations are helping teams understand what’s really important to each person. It’s giving them the insights they need to provide good person-centred care. For example, having personalised prompts and reminders for each individual. A great example of this in practice comes from NHS Borders and can be downloaded here.

In Lincolnshire, our Its All About People Champions are encouraging colleagues to celebrate these ways of working by using #WMTY24 on social media posts on the day, and the weeks leading up to it. If you need help sharing your stories or would like tips on starting these conversations yourself, please search for the hashtag or look up @WMTYScot on Twitter and Facebook. We also hope to showcase some of these at the conference in July.

Understanding what matters to ourselves and others is a foundation of Our Shared Agreement. As well as thinking about yourself, maybe you could encourage people to complete a 1 page profile so you can learn more about what matters to them? Or what about asking your colleagues/friends/family/people you support to complete a ‘Good Day/Bad Day’ to find out their ‘triggers and glimmers’?

Whatever you choose to do, please help us build the movement by sharing What Matters to You on 6th June #WMTY24 #ItsAllAboutPeople
